TPO Overview

A thermoplastic membrane is made with a synthetic substance that softens when it is heated and hardens when cooled. Since the material is able to adhere to itself, it is used as a single ply roofing membrane. Thermoplastic olefin (TPO) is one of the most common single ply membranes used for low slope roofing projects.

TPO has been used in roof systems in the United States for approximately 25 years. TPO membranes are available is several colors and thicknesses. The membranes can be white, gray or black and range in thickness from 45 mils to 80 mils.

TPO membranes can be installed using two different methods. They can be installed using mechanical attachment or adhered, or a combination of both methods depending on the building. TPO is made with a polymerized rubber that makes it flexible. Flame retardants are also added.

In addition, TPO membranes can help buildings meet LEED objectives. TPO roofing membranes are also recyclable.
